Sergison Bates | Performing Arts Quarter, Leuven

At the heart of the proposal is a strategy for reimagining existing buildings and public spaces to create an “open house” under a great roof in the medieval city centre of Leuven, next to the Augustinessen Monastery and Predikheren Church. Instead of a single monumental building, the project focuses on creating connections with the historical layers of the urban fabric.

As well as a set of performance spaces and associated services, the new structure aims to be a cultural platform rather than a conventional arts venue. The Main Hall can be used in multiple arrangements: from traditional theatrical configurations with a grandstand and podium to configurations in which the audience sits around the central void of the space on stacked shallow balconies. It can also become a flat floor, engaged with the public realm, an open hall for the city. This adaptability and flexibility of arrangements gives the building a sense of energy, focus, and a unique identity embedded within the city of Leuven.
